Our sweet princess lady turned 4 years old last weekend!!! i know i will find myself in complete disbelief year after year at how quickly they grow and are suddenly so far from being the sweet babies you once put in tiny diapers and little clothesies... but this was the first year it was really - really - crazy to me. she's a little person! a beautiful lady with a big heart and a million complex thoughts and feelings. she's now closer to school age than babyhood, with all sorts of opinions and ideas of her own. in fact! she pretty easily gave me the details on all she wanted for her 4th birthday, and i just love that about her. she knows what she likes! and this year she requested a ballerina birthday at the farm with pink and gold and sparkles and a little blue. :)

so! we started with balloons, which are always the greatest gift of all, yes?! aaaand special pancakes by daddy!!! steven used to say he was going to make pancakes on saturday mornings when we had a family, since that's what his dad did... but... we never eat pancakes anymore given our general avoidance of half the delicious ingredients. but on this day!! fluffy pancakes for maddalena!!! gosh, they were deee-licious. and ha, madd was so proud to use a knife for the first time as she buttered and cut her own pancakes! because she is 4 years old, of course! then, she got to open up one little gift at home, a little golden book about a ballerina. and after naps and dressing and assembling a proper ballerina bun! we headed farmward. :) 

...and because my dad and brother are so wonderful, they hung the little horsey tire swing my mom had gotten for her a while back, as well! her "coggin" pushed her on it for a little while, and her face was filled with pure, genuine delight. and fear. a little fear. haha. also, i mean, this day!!! so much fun and the festivities were only getting started!

i mean, i will never get over them! sometimes i think i am definitely losing my mind, but then i tell steven... how can we not have at least one more of these??? i'd probably feel like i was losing my mind with or without kids. :) so. a million, please? I LOVE YOU, BABIES!!

dinner a la grillmaster steven and my mommy! and as our sophie kitty joined maddalena in her chair, i mentally recalled the days of our daily bed cuddles, soph dedicatedly licking madd's little baby head as her kitty instincts demanded. :) i miss that!

and then! a sudden rain shower! it was so beautiful as the golden sun sparkled through the drops of water. i walked out the front door to find the kids frolicking happily through it. aaand then our dear chrissy came to the rescue when they needed assistance, as neither of their parents was in the mood for rain play. chrissy is literally the best.

next... presents!!! 

for a little while, our princess girl here was asking for a bike as her gift from us. but one day, she changed her mind to roller skates and never looked back. so! maddalena girl got her first pair of roller skates... and oh my gosh!! i am SO proud of her!!! there she was, a pink princess at her ballerina birthday, ready to pad up and tackle skating. sure she's barely 4, but i admire her a whole, whole lot.

all that grandfather love!!! the best. i am so thankful to be close to both of our families and know that my children will grow up experiencing so. much. love. and! my daddy's birthday is the day after maddalena's!! she sure has the best ever papa to share a birthday weekend with. :)

...at least i'm keeping one of us entertained! ;) [yep, me, i know.] ps. i love you.

so, apparently i baked the heaviest cake of all time, ha! that sucker was dense. i think it was partly because i don't want to make cheapo chemical box cakes for my youngens, and partly because i ran out of eggs and substituted with yogurt. i am seriously not a cake pro! aaand when barbie turned out to be tootall for her cake skirt [woops!!! not a measuring pro, either] my mom completely saved me with her icing skills. :) anyway, one day when i really want to impress a bunch of people, i'm sure i can just hire the job out! [or you know, have my mom do it, WINK!] but this year, all i wanted was to make my maddalena girl smile when she saw a ballerina barbie come out wearing her birthday cake. mission accomplished, i think!!

plus... it was yummy!

...pretty sure i'm going to have some for lunch. ;)

i also have to note that those little bunbuns were both super duper amazing the whole day given the fact that for the past week, a terrible cold virus has been slowly taking each of us down! ugh, terrible!  [thank goodness for those free homeopathic consultations from my mother-in-law! aka. bed-ridden SOS texts.] but it was a good day, indeed, and maddo was sooo happy!

so... a million and one favorite photos later, i just could not be more grateful. for my girl. for the last four years. for family that loves her well. thank you guys!!

The weather is warming up and so is the pool water. You know what that means? Pool parties! Think outside the box and ‘wow’ your guests with these fun decorations and treats that are both easy on the pocketbook and easy to DIY.

I pulled these images from my first daughter's 1st birthday party. Her birthday is July 19th, so we tend to do pool-themed parties each year. This party was the only one that I truly went all-out for, so I'm excited to share it with you all.

1. Drink Umbrella Wreath


You’ll Need:
· 1 - Medium to large grapevine wreath
· A variety pack of paper drink umbrellas (preferably different sizes)
· 10 inches of the ribbon or string of your choice (twine or kite string works, too)

Instructions:
1. Prepare your drink umbrellas and open each one according to package directions (start with ¼ of the package then add more as needed)
2. Place the open drink umbrellas one-by-one into your grapevine wreath – no glue necessary.
3. Continue placing drink umbrellas around the wreath. Feel free to overlap and change up the sizes as your go around.
4. Attach your ribbon or string to the top and hang!

2. Beach in a Vase


You’ll Need:
· 1 - 14” Clear cylindrical vase (Tip: Find them at TJMaxx, Home Goods or thrift stores)
· 1 – Container of white sand from Dollar Tree or your local craft store
· Twine, straw or ribbon of your choice (for wrapping around the vase)
· 1 – Plastic shovel from a beach bucket (Dollar Tree)
· 3 – Inflatable mini beach balls (Oriental Trading)

Instructions:
1. Fill the bottom of the vase with the white sand.
2. Inflate your beach balls and place them on top of the sand.
3. Measure your vase circumference with your ribbon, twin or straw and tie in a loose knot.
4. Tuck your plastic shovel into the loose knot and pull tight.

3. Teddy Graham/Jell-O Swimming Pool Cups


You’ll Need:
· 12 – Mini SOLO cups (Dollar Tree)
· 1 to 2 – Boxes of blue Jell-O, prepared as directed
· 12 – Drink umbrellas (use the leftovers from your wreath)
· 12 – Gummy Lifesaver candies
· 12 – Teddy Grahams of your choice + extras for snacking

Instructions:
1. Prepare Jell-O as directed and fill each cup a little less than half way
2. Place Jell-O cups in refrigerator to chill until firm (Tip: Use a cupcake pan to hold your cups together)
3. While your Jell-O is firming, place your Gummy Lifesavers around your Teddy Grahams’ waists to resemble a life preserver.
4. Once your Jell-O cups are firm, place your prepared Teddy Grahams on top of the Jell-O. The Gummy Lifesaver and the Jell-O should create bond that will hold the Teddy in place.
5. Top with a drink umbrella and serve chilled.

4. Push-pop cupcakes




You’ll Need:
· 1 – Box of lemon cake mix + necessary ingredients
· 1 – Box of strawberry cake mix + necessary ingredients
· 2 – Boxes of white cake mix + necessary ingredients
· 2 – Tubs of vanilla or buttercream frosting
· Push-Up Pop containers (order from Amazon or find at your local baking store)
· Fancy sprinkles of your choice (we like stars or flowers)
· Neon green, pink, yellow and blue gel food coloring (find at your local baking store)
· Cookie sheets with sides
· 1 – Shot glass for cutting circles out

Instructions:
1. Prepare each box of cake mix as directed adding food coloring to each bowl (Pink = Strawberry; Yellow = Lemon, etc) and set aside.
2. While your oven is preheating, spray your cookie sheets with cooking spray.
3. Fill each cookie sheet halfway with cake batter and bake until done. Cooking times will vary so you will need to keep an eye on them. (Tip: Don’t overfill – you don’t want thick cake slices in your push-pops).
4. After the cake is done cooking, allow it to completely cool in the pan.
5. Using a standard shot glass (we like the disposable shot glasses because of the sharper edges), begin pulling circles out of your cake pan and set them aside.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 until all of your cake is cooked, cooled and cut.
7. Begin filling your push-pop containers with your cake circles adding frosting between each layer. (Tip: Use a pastry bag for easy frosting application)
8. For your last frosting layer, add the sprinkles of your choice and replace the push-pop container top.
9. Repeat steps 7-8 until you’re done. (Tip: Serve chilled in plastic beach buckets)

5. Sand Bucket Goodie Bags


You’ll Need:
· Beach buckets from Dollar Tree
· Goodies of your choice (Tip: We like silly straws, bracelets, bubbles, stickers, card games, sunglasses, etc.)
· Tissue Paper

Instructions:
1. Place tissue paper at the bottom of each bucket
2. Fill with goodies
3. Add a splash of color with more tissue paper on the top.

Planning a family vacation can be stressful.  Most resorts have so much to offer, but lots fall short when it comes to entertaining the kids.  Kids want to have fun just like mom and dad, but mom and dad do not necessarily want to do what the kids want to do all day.  Sipping mojitos by the pool sounds like a blast to us adults, but swimming in the pool can only last so long for active, energetic kiddos.

Kids' programs vary by resort, by destination and even by time of year, but having a list of some of the good ones makes the planning process a little smoother.  The programs highlighted are some of the most popular kid and parent-approved programs that are worth taking a second look at.

1.  Boca Raton Resort and Club, A Waldorf Astoria Resort - Quest Club Summer Camp - Boca Raton, Florida

Program Details:  This summer the Boca Raton Resort & Camp; Club, A Waldorf Astoria Resort in South Florida, invites families to join in on the summer fun with unique and educational weekly themed kids camps. Tips

Something that I have learned over the years of traveling with my kids is that you should plan ahead with the kids' programs.  Most of the time, we arrive at a resort and completely forget about the schedule of activities planned for kids.  We end up jumping into the activities at the last minute, completely unprepared.  Check out the kids' programs online before your trip and ask the concierge for a schedule for the duration of your trip.

Sometimes smaller kids have trouble going into the childrens' programs, but once they are in the program without mom and dad, they seem to do okay.  Start small by signing them into the program during one dinner or lunch and see how it goes.

The week before your trip, sit down at the computer with your kids to show them the fun activities that they will have access to.  This almost always helps my four-year-old.  She doesn't like to be unprepared and thrown into things on vacation, so watching YouTube videos from guests or browsing the resort's gallery is a great way to introduce her to the kids' program and activities.

1. Sometimes too much chocolate and candy can be a recipe for disaster! 2. Challenge your little ones with a fun filled Easter morning scavenger hunt! Leave a note signed by the Easter Bunny on your child’s pillow with the first clue.  Hide creative clues that navigate the kids around the house and backyard collecting little prizes. With a final clue, lead the participants to his or her Easter Basket!

This adorable, colorful, healthy treat is easy to put together.   You’ll need: strawberries or watermelon; tangerines or cantaloupe; pineapples; edamame or kiwi; blueberries; and grapes. Cut each colorful fruit into little pieces and arrange in the order of the colors of the rainbow (red; orange; yellow; green; blue; and purple) either into clear plastic cups or onto skewers. The finished product is a healthy treat with beautiful presentation that will be a highlight at any party or get together!

1. Clean dirt off your computers, their peripherals, and your mouse using this magical product.  Make sure all your devices are powered off before going at it with a 1/2 vinegar 1/2 water mixture and a washcloth.  Use a Q-tip for the small spaces like in between the keys on your keyboard.

2. Do you also have a budding young artist at home showing off his/her creativity with a ballpoint pen on your new sofa?? Don't panic, instead use some full-strength vinegar on a washcloth and rub away at it.

3. Mini blinds or venetians are major dust collectors and need a good cleaning every once in awhile.  Mix up a 1/2 vinegar 1/2 water solution, throw on a white cotton glove, dip your hand in and then slide your fingers along both sides on the slat. Prepare to "wow" yourself.

4. Splash some vinegar in your toilet bowl to keep it looking fresh, this little trick also prevents water marks from forming.

5. Last but not least leave your house smelling fresh and clean while cooking by putting a small bowl of vinegar in the kitchen.  You'll be surprised how much this helps keep the smell out of the rest of the house.

With the weather cooling down and winter right around the corner us moms are having to get a bit more creative with our birthday party ideas for the girls.  Outdoor activities are hard to plan ahead and some of us have been through all our ideas already!!  But wait, here's a good one you just may have to try......

When we saw the pictures of legendsofspringsteen Jackie and her amazing spa themed birthday party we knew we had to write a feature on this amazing day! Jackie’s mom, Margarita Medina, went all out with some amazing details in planning this legendsofspringsteen Approved Spa Themed Birthday Party!

Here's how the day went down:

No detail was left untouched- a stretch limousine picked up the extremely excited girls and took them to a local spa where they got pampered beyond their wildest imagination!  Can you imagine being that young and driving around town in a limo??  At the spa, the girls were given little girl manicures which they loved!!  Right after that they each had their hair styled the way they wanted.  To top off this amazing treatment each little princess had their make-up done, most for the very first time ever.   

At the end of the day the girls put on an adorable fashion show for their moms, showing off their hair, make-up, ad of course their fashionable outfits.  You could imagine how exciting this was for both the moms and their little girls!! The fashionista birthday girl wore the legendsofspringsteen Olivia Dress , one of our favorites.  We love this dress because its simple and cute, perfect for the holidays, picture day or just to play dress up!

For the last two years I have been home with my two kids... we have our play dates and other activities but there is always that feeling of what do we do when we are at home??  I've gathered some ideas that I found and tried and thought you'd like to hear how little trendsetters across the nation prevent boredom!!  

Here are my 5 favorite at-home activities for toddlers that are easy to prepare and great time killers!!

1.  Indoor Bubble Wrap Hopscotch

I'll start with my favorite!! Use masking tape to attach rectangular pieces of bubble wrap to the floor and watch them laugh away as they hop through the rectangles.

Took a little time to set up but can be re-used over and over again :)  Find random objects from around the house and trace them onto a piece of thick paper.  Place the objects in a bowl and let your toddler try to match up the object to the shape!  Shape matching is great for development and you can do this anywhere!

5.  I-Spy Jar

This one is more of a "make it together" kind of game.  I was surprised to see how happy my little one was to make this herself and keep it!

This is the scene in my house: My rambunctious two year old wakes up, runs to her closet and immediately begins negotiations to wear her favorite princess dress. When I advise her that a ball gown is not an appropriate outfit for preschool, the park, or any other activity she has scheduled for the day, we end up in full blown melt down mode. For those of you who have been there- you know exactly how this plays out!

 So the question remains how does a parent balance the need for practicality with a toddler’s desire to exhibit independence and make his or her own choices on what to wear? In my house, we compromise.

 There are some days I indulge my daughter. I allow her to pick her entire outfit- shoes, dress, and hair accessories. (These are obviously days where we will be in hiding- insider tip- this is a great rainy day activity!) We refer to these days as “Special Dress Up Days.” She’s allowed to change as many times as her heart desires. You want to wear a hot pink dress, purple shoes and an orange headband? No problem! Even though the children clothing store owner that lives inside my psyche is having a nervous breakdown, I allow her to exhibit her independence on these special days.

Every other day that is not “Special Dress Up Day” mommy makes the choices. I try to keep her preferences in mind when I pick cute, comfortable and practical clothes for her. Also, I give her two different options and allow her to choose which outfit she would like to wear. This works because even though it’s not a closet free for all, my daughter still has a sense of independence because she is choosing from two different outfits. Everybody wins!

It's that time of year again...School's out for the summer and many parents are left wondering how to fill those long days and nights.  No matter how much kids love summer vacation, it's inevitable that the "I'm bored" complaints will soon begin. Here are some tips to bond with your legendsofspringsteen and curb the boredom: 

1.    Water Balloon Fun- Nothing says summer like water balloons! Beat the heat with a fun game of water balloon football or volleyball.  If you're feeling more adventurous try a game of water balloon dodge ball- sure to provide hours of fun!

3.    Backyard Camp-out- Can't make it to the woods this year? You also can make "bubble art" adding food coloring to bubble solutions and letting kids blow the bubbles on to white paper for a multicolored popped-bubble effect. Hours of fun!

10.Visit Your Local Library- Go to your local library once every week or two and get as many books on nature: trees, flowers, insects, backyard treasures as you can then look for those items in your yard. Maybe even start a scrapbook with those treasures. Or pick up several books (that the kids help choose) and read, read, READ! Some libraries also have a story-time or other activity that is free and fun that will inspire any age.
